The Advertising Standards Authority

The Advertising Standards Authority role is to "regulate the content of advertisements, sales promotions and direct marketing in the UK" by investigating "complaints made about ads, sales promotions or direct marketing", (e.g. if a company claims on an advert that their product does something e.g. a foundation claims to give the user flawless skin subsequently influencing the consumer to buy the product and then not producing the effects it said it would e.g. flawless skin due to the model will usually have been airbrushed) deciding whether such advertising complies with its advertising standards codes. These codes stipulate that "before distributing or submitting a marketing communication for publication, marketers must hold documentary evidence to prove all claims, whether direct or implied, that are capable of objective substantiation" (such as documented evidence that when the product was tested it gave the person being tested o flawless skin)and that "no marketing communication should mislead, or be likely to mislead, by inaccuracy, ambiguity, exaggeration, omission or otherwise".

How to write an advertising proposal

I'm no expert in advertising but my mentor in college is. Anyway, I'll just provide an overview of how an advertising proposal goes and I don't really want to go technical and stuff.

Now the thing is the client usually has no idea how advertising works. They go to the advertising agency for help but sometimes they don't acknowledge what the ad agency thinks is best for their product or service. They have expectations already and they don't realise that the ad agency has a better idea of how it should be done. It's alright though. The advertising agency doesn't just try to convince a target market to patronize a certain good or service, they also try to convince the client as well to give there advertising proposal the thumbs up. They have to come up with a presentation of how they visualise the campaign should be so that the client would think the same way and fund the campaign

Here is basically how the advertising proposal goes. This totally needs to be elaborated.

1. A study of the product: "What is it?"
A background study of the product is the foundation of a proposal. How are you supposed to advertise something you don't even know?

2. A study of the industry: "Where are we?"
It's not just about the product after all. It's also about how the product is together with all the other products out there. What is the current situation? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Where do you think are the good opportunities for the products? Who are considered as competition/threat?

3. "Why are we there?"
What were the previous steps taken that is why the product is like that? Where the steps any good?

4. "Where are we going?"
Define the objectives of the campaign; your vision. Who is your target market? How are you able to get a key response (it's basically the reaction you want the product to receive) from them? How do you reach out?

5. "Are we getting there?"
Is it even plausible? Of course it is. Why would you even make a campaign if you think it cannot be done? Present your visual aids. Do you think a TV commercial fits in the campaign? Come up with a storyboard. A print ad? Why don't you show them a rough draft ? Let the client know that with this campaign, the vision will be materialized. I mean, you already have the sketches and stuff, some magic done by the media department and your work will be awesome.

At panel, provide hard copies of your presentation. Be sure of what you are talking about. If you don't even understand what the hell you are discussing, how would the client (who can be dumbasses, really) get it?

Second draft of printing methods

University of Cheshunt -Administration department

To: Mrs. A Liner Head if Administration

From: Leonie Lynagh
Date: Thursday 22nd February 2012

Report into printed materials for ‘Top Note’ award ceremony
I have been asked to research five printed products for this event: posters invitations for award winners and VIPs and program sheets for all guests. The requirements for each is listed below.

Requirements

Posters - Should be designed by an art student and reflect the creative nature of the award winners’ work.30 posters would be sufficient for the university site to put around the university to advertise the event.

Invitations-should have a high and expensive quality feel to them as this is the most important award the department gives each year. There will be 40 award winners and 25 VIP guests.
The program is only a running order and can be mass printed on A5 paper so it does not have to be high quality.300 should be enough to cover the largest number of guest expected meaning we will have to produce
A lot and spending the least amount of money.

Below I have listed the printing methods, I would use for each one after analyzing five types of printing method.

A high status invitation card for prizewinners and important guests-

The printing method I would use is letterpress. This is because it is used for special occasions, such as the art and music award ceremony. Furthermore it takes time (slow process) and precision and allot of effort and craftsmanship for each individual one unlike if it was offset litho which wouldn’t take long also for it to be high status the printing is very expensive around £320for what we ant and its also expensive due to the time and skill needed to make it look perfect and will cost around such as lining the letter press making the letters from melted silver metal and machinery (letterpress) and ink. Furthermore the end quality is of a high quality and would fit with the aim of a high status invitation. Lastly I would only need to make a few because not every one is a prizewinners or a special guest so due to it taking long could be a disadvantage however due to it only being a few it would hopefully not take to long and would look a higher quality than digital printing due to it digital printing doesn’t give crisp picture and doesn’t enhance the picture.

A running order sheet for everyone who attends-

The printing methods, I would use is offset litho because its efficient, cheap, and relatively easy this would tie in with my aim because we need a lot of invitations done very fast to get them out also you couldn’t use letterpress because it is very expensive and take a longer period of time to create and this is very cheap unlike the other printing methods. Furthermore why it may be cheap around £100 is because we don’t need may people to do it (work the machines) and doesn’t take much skill because the machines do most of the work and they can work 24/7 the process the machines do is the ink duct roller machine this delivers ink from the ink duct to the ink pyramid. Also Called the 'Ink Train’. The ductor roller, sometimes called a vibrator roller due to its rapid back and forth motion, transfers ink from the duct roller to the first distribution roller. It is never in contact with both rollers at the same time.
I will need to make around 100 or more due to all the parents who are coming; Making this a cheaper method which fits perfectly with the criteria.

An arty stylish poster for the event-

The method I would use for an arty stylish poster taken into account I would need a lot t put around the school u would use digital printing (computer printer) due to it can produce just the amount of posters we need around (500) for a reasonable price due to the process doesn’t need expensive metal printing plates meaning the price you have to pay is lowered and also because you could do the process at home without needing an expert it reduces the cost dramatically unlike letterpress which needs an expert to produce the product, the quality is in the middle due to sometimes printing can produce streaks over solid colour areas however the cheapness (£80) and the quickness outweighs the negatives.
